Summary | Currently, the assessment of mercury contamination of unconsolidated sediments is guided by total concentration, which is not an objective measure, because mercury toxicity depends on the compound form. Areal sampling revealed concentrations of 100 to 17000 ppb. The method of thermal-desorption curves revealed an increase in the proportion of weakly adsorbed metallic mercury with an increase in the gross concentration of mercury in the sample. Combination of thermaldesorption curves and selective chemical extraction methods allowed to make an assumption on the preferential finding of mercury in adsorbed on the surface of the particles associated with the oxides and hydroxides of iron and enclosed in acid-soluble secondary minerals states. | ||
