Summary The use of Modernism as either a word, a term, or a notion in the English language literary criticism has been progressing soundly during the last fi fty years. The paper investigates the history of the words use from its zero start in the 1960-1970-ies when, for example, The Encyclopedia Americana had no Modernism entry whatsoever, up to the first decade of the 21 century when Modernism seems to turn into one of the most popular academic issues. The word though is still considered vague and too misleading to be used as a valid literary term. The paper examines two hypotheses that might account for the words imperfection. Th e first one - the term is still instable because the period of time it is being used is too short. The second one - the word has an inherent ambiguity due to its semantic link to contemporarily. The paper examines the sources for the distinction between different conceptions of Modernism in the English language literary criticism. It suggests that there be only few that correlate with approaches that are still popular among Russian scholars.
