Title THE HISTORY OF FORMING COPULATIVE VERB SLUZHIT’ IN THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE

Summary The article describes the ways in the development of abstract copulative meaning of full-meaning verb sluzhit ’ and the acquisition of the ability of this verb in the position of copula to connect with the Instrumental case of the noun. Having developed the abstract meaning, the verb sluzhit ’ at fi rst combined with prepositional forms of the noun (“ k + Dative”, “ vmesto + Genitive”, “z a + Genitive” and others) and with the infi nitive. But the rapid development of the Instrumental case as a predicate form of noun in the Russian language has influenced the changes in the distribution of the verb sluzhit ’. It is showed the stages and conditions for replacement of prepositional forms of the noun by form of Instrumental case without preposition.
