Summary The article considers the design of learning tasks that are aimed to develop students’ writing skills. The author suggests developing learning tasks that are focused on real professional functions and, at the same time, are feasible. The strategy of task development that is described in the article means that real-life professional tasks are described as a sequence of steps (or subtasks). All the competences that are relevant to the subtasks are elicited and specifi ed. This will form the basis for designing series of learning tasks, graded in terms of linguistic and cognitive difficulty.
