Summary The article analyses how the notion of meaning can be embedded in sociological theory as a substantive theoretical construct. The author considers three possibilities to theorize meaning sociologically: the N. Luhmanns theory of social systems, B. Latours actor-network theory and P. Ricoeurs reconceptualization of M. Webers notion of the meaning of social action. In conclusion, the author notes that the embedment of the notion of meaning in sociological theory is always linked with philosophical concepts. The main theoretical output of the article is that meaning in the analyzed theories is considered as a space of unequal probability opportunities. This result can be used in further sociological theorizing of the lamination of meaning.
