Summary | This article is about the construction of gender, social and national stereotypes in the characters� speech of Th. Fontane�s novel �Effi Briest�. It is shown how the heroes create the framework of �imagined communities� on the speech level. The ways of gender, nation and society consruction are considered in the light of Judith Butler�s performative gender concept and of Benedict Anderson� nationalism theory. The study reveals the generation mechanisms affinity between gender, nation and class constructs as exemplified by the concrete work of 19th-century German literature. | ||
