Title Some Negative Effects of Research Grants

Summary Research grants - being not only a financial mechanism, but also one of the modern forms of scientific capital - nowadays play a vital role for scientific communities of most countries. Their economic and symbolic value causes increase in interest among researchers and research institutions and their aspiration for getting grants, and leads to reduction of the part of scientifi c community which stays aside this system. It poses a question about potential risks and threats it can potentially bring to scientists� life and work. Though positive aspects of research grants system are overall known and appreciated by academics, its negative side-effects stay meanwhile relatively uninvestigated. The present paper is aimed at fi lling up this gap and analyzes the dysfunctions of grant system. Empirically, the work is based on the results of several research on the topic, which were carried out in some foreign countries, and the interviews with Russian grant-holders.
